Yol Valley

It is located in the mountains of Züün Saikhan, 56 kilometers from Dalazadgad city, Omnogovi province. Yol valley is the deep and narrow valley of Gobi Gurvan Saikhan Mountain. Yol valley originally established to conserve birdlife in the region. But it’s now more famous for its dramatic and very unusual scenery. Here, travelers can discover permanent glaciers, endemic plants, and rare animals such as Siberian ibex, argali, or bearded vultures. Snow leopards and other predators also live in the Yol Valley area.
The valley is elevated 2800 meters above sea level and covers an area of 64 square km. The length of Yol Valley is 8 kilometers. More than 620 species of endemic plants from Central Asia grow there. The park also houses many animals: Mongolian gazelles, Siberian ibex, mouflons, argalis, wild goats, and the very discreet snow leopard. In total, 52 species of mammals are registered in this area, among which eight are protected species.
A small museum marks the entrance to the protected zone and provides information on the petrified trees, fauna, and flora of the Gobi. In earlier times, the blocks of ice rarely melted, being protected from the Gobi bright sunlight. This however has changed in recent years, partially because of climate change and multitudes of tourists that walk on the ice.

History of the Park:
The park was protected in 1965 for reserving the beautiful nature of Yolyn Am of the East Saikhan Mountain. In 1993, by Parliament Resolution No.83, its territory was extended by further including territories of Khongor Sand Dunes, as well as precious paleontological sites of Nemegt, Khermen Tsav, and Zulganai river.

Why this Mountain valley named Yol?
The mountain valley named “Yolyn Am”- “The gorge of a bearded vulture” because many bearded vultures fly over the mountain and sometimes gathered together. Yol is a very rare bird and lives only in Central Asia, high in 1500-3000 meters, and nests at least 2000m above sea level.

Gobi Gurvan Saikhan Mountain (Three beauties of Gobi) National Park:
The Gobi Gurvan Saikhan National Park is the largest protected area stretching 380 km from east to west and 80 km from north to south and located in southern Mongolia. Gurvan Saikhan means,” The Three Beauty”, the three highest peaks of the Gobi-Altai range: Baruun Saikhan,” the beautiful Westerner”; Dund Saikhan, ”the beautiful Central”; Züün Saikhan, the ”beautiful Easterner”. The highest of these subranges is the Zuun Saikhan (beautiful Easterner) that reaches 2846 meters at its highest point. Here we can discover Yol Valley.
