Bayanzag is located 17km away from Bulgan soum and about 100 km (62,14 miles) from northwest of Dalanzadgad. Bayanzag, which means ‘rich in saxaul shrubs’, was once an ancient sea bed, existed 60-70 million years ago. This amazing place is more commonly known as ‘Flaming Cliffs’ and a place where a lot of Paleontological findings have been discovered. The escarpments height is 20-50m and these red sedimentary rocks stretch from south to north, 5 km wide and 8 km long. Bayanzag has saxaul groves in its northern part.
In this territory, American paleontologists led by Roy Chapman Andrew found the world's first nest of dinosaur eggs and unearthed remains of more than 100 fossilized remains of dinosaurs while they were researching a trace of ancient people with his crew in 1922. Their findings proved to the world that dinosaurs laid eggs. This is how Bayanzag “Flaming cliff”, as well as the Mongolian Gobi, become famous in the field of paleontology worldwide. Nowadays, it has become a famous touristy place.
