Khongoryn Els sand dune

Khongoryn Els dunes are located in the extreme south of the Gobi Desert and around 180km from Dalanzadgad town in Umnugobi province and around 763 km from Ulaanbaatar city. It extends from northwest to southeast along the northern side of Sevrei and Zuulun mountain ranges in Bayandalai and Sevrei soums.
Khongoryn Els dunes are the largest and most breathtaking sand dunes in Mongolia reaching as high as 100-300 meters (328,08 – 984,25 feet) above the ground.  And its width is 7-8 km while its length is 180 km and its area is more than 900 square kilometers (347,49 square miles). The widest sand is 27 kilometers in the northwest and the narrowest is 800 meters in the center.

They are undoubtedly among the most spectacular in the country. The sand dune changes the color with each hour of one day, from pale yellow to silver, to rise colored at sunrise. In front of the sand, there is a Sevrei Mountain, which was nicknamed the "Queen" because of the local legend that the mountain blesses women. There are many rock paintings on the rocks of Sevrei Mountainв In earlier times, saxaul trees near the Khongor sands were very high and dense. It is said that it was difficult to find camels once in the saxaul forest.
Annual mini Naadam is held by Khongor sand dunes on 15 August.

Attractions

Duut Mankhan

The locals call the highest part of Khongor sand Duut Mankhan which means “Singing sands”. It looks majestic even higher than the ninth floor of an apartment building. That singing sound like an airplane engine is made when the sun-heated sand gently slides in the wind. Although it could be a little challenging to get to the top of the Dunes, once you are on the top, the awesome scenery and a vast landscape are always worth it.

Small tip:
When climbing to the sand dune, start with a shorter sandhill, and it will be easier to follow the ridge from one end to the other. Because of the loose sand, it is impossible to climb steeply and get tired easily

The Khongoryn River
This river flows along the sand dunes and forms an oasis in the middle of the dried landscape. The river is sourced by underground flows from the surrounding mountain while majestic Noyon and Sevrei Mountains towers in the south of the sand dune.
