Camel Riding in Mongolia

Why Ride a Camel in Mongolia?

Unlike one-humped camels, sitting on a two-humped camel is much more comfortable and stable, offering a smoother and safer ride. In Mongolia, camels have long been an essential part of life, particularly in the desert regions, where they play a crucial role in transportation and are integral to the nomadic lifestyle. The Bactrian camel, a two-humped breed native to Mongolia, is perfectly adapted to the harsh desert climate. These resilient animals endure extreme temperatures and navigate tough terrain, making them ideal for long journeys across the Gobi Desert.  For centuries, these camels, often called "desert cars," have carried goods, people, and supplies. Riding one provides an opportunity to experience the same traditions and way of life that have shaped Mongolian nomadic culture for generations.

Where Can You Ride a Camel in Mongolia?

  • The Gobi Desert: One of the most famous places for camel riding, the Gobi Desert offers expansive dunes and dramatic landscapes. Riding through this vast desert allows you to experience its natural beauty and connect with its history.
  • Mini (Elsen Tasarkhai) Gobi National Park: Located near Ulaanbaatar, Elsen Tasarkhai is a smaller desert area surrounded by green steppes. The name means "an isolated torn-off piece of sand," and it’s an ideal location for camel trekking, where the desert and steppe meet.

Best Time to Ride in Mongolia

The best time for camel trekking is between late May and early September when the weather is warm and the desert landscapes are at their most accessible. If you visit during winter, you can attend the Thousand Camel Festival, held at different times each year. The festival includes camel races, traditional music, and dance, offering a deeper understanding of Mongolia’s cultural heritage and nomadic lifestyle. Also the Gobi Desert is warmer in winter than other parts of Mongolia. Camels look even more beautiful in winter, and the season offers a peaceful, unique experience.

How to ride a Bactrian camel in Mongolia

  •  Swing your leg over the back and place yourself in the middle of the humps.
  •  The camel will get up from its back legs first, so lean back in your saddle as it starts to stand. The camel will then raise its front legs, as it does this you should lean forward.
  •  Do not change your clothes, take off clothes or let things hang off the camel, make any sudden moves and noises while riding to avoid startling it.
  •  Do not wrap any rope around your hand or legs while riding. (It can cause injury in case of a fall)
  • There is a risk that loose ends start flapping in the wind, clothing items fall off the camel- all of which might startle a camel, yours, or of the fellow riders.
  • Do not use an umbrella during camel riding. Do not open an umbrella close to a camel.
