Khamariin Khiid

The monastery is 450km from Ulaanbaatar and located in Dorngobi Province – just 50km on asphalt road from the provincial capital of Sainshand. At its heyday, the monastery reportedly accommodated over 80 temples and some 5000 monks. The monastery now has more than 10 monks. Mongolian Buddhists believe this monastery in the Gobi Desert to be the center of the world's spiritual energy. The Monastery was an important center of the Buddhist "red sect", and seat of the Gobi Dogshin Noyon Khutagt ("Terrible Noble Saint of the Gobi").

History of the Khamariin Khiid Monastery:

D.Danzanravjaa, a famous 19th-century Mongolian educator, painter, composer, poet, and nobleman, founded Khamar Monastery in 1820 at the age of 17 in Uvur Khamar. The first Mongolian theater was established in Khamrin Monastery in the 1830s as Namtar Duulah Datsan. Researchers believe that this was the first theater in the history of Mongolian theater. In addition to the theater, the Khamrin Monastery established a school called the Children's Datsan, which encouraged women as well as children to become literate. Khamariin Khiid was not only a place of religion but also a cultural and academic center, housing 500 permanent residents at its peak. The compound consisted of four colleges, which taught general studies, astronomy, art, and theatre.
During the destruction of the Khamar Monastery due to the Communist Purge in 1937, Lama G.Tudev hid 64 boxes of religious items and buried them for 52 years until 1990. Those remaining items were returned to Khamrin Monastery and resumed its operation.
