Baga Gazariin Chuluu

Baga Gazriin Chuluu is an amazing granitic formation surrounded by a plain, located 37km from Delgertsogt sum, Dundgovi province, and 250km (155,34 miles) away in the south of Ulaanbaatar. Driving from Ulaanbaatar takes around 4 hours traveling on good roads to Mandalgobi and then a 2-hour drive on bumpy roads.  Baga Gazriin Chuluu can be translated to” stone of the little place”, At a height of 1750 meters (1,09 mile), there are springs, ancient tombs, and burials as well as caves paintings, and various statues and monuments.

The highest point of the Baga Gazriin Chuluu is Takhilgiin Khavtsal (Canyon of Offering) at a height of 1,768 meters above sea level. There are also over 20 kinds of medical herbs like burnet, many kinds of world rare animals like marmot, ibex, gazelle, and mountain sheep. 

 

Attractions:

  • Lovonchamba Temple: It is said to be built by a high-ranking monk known as ‘Mergen mur’ for the purpose of meditation. Later on, in the early 20th century, a scholar-monk named Zava Damdin also temporarily used the temple to work on his studies and research.
  • Sudutiin Am (Burnet Valley): It is so named because of the abundance of burnet in the valley
    More than 300 years ago, two monks used to stay in the middle of an aspen grove in the valley, building their respective Gers so that making a small mountain stream would flow through their gers, and they would fetch water and cook without leaving their homes. 
  • Bolort cave: A cave filled with crystal rock formations where a Buddhist lama meditated for many years
  • Eye Spring: The stagnating rainwater supposedly good at eye treatment. A little ladle has been put on the rock for the people to wash their eyes with the sacred water. It is located 1 km from Sudut Valley
  • Ger Rock: a boulder that has many inscriptions, including an inscription of a person holding onto two ibexes tied together with a rope that traces back to the Late Bronze Age. Near the Ger Rock boulder, there is also an inscription of two large deers on a tall boulder, which attracts the attention of anyone visiting the site. The inscription of the deers is 170 cm in length and 90 cm in width.
  • Jargalant Cave: Jargalant Cave is an 18-meter-long cave located 1 km from the valley of Sudut. Walk vertically in half and sit in half. 
  • There are 64 ancient Hunnu tombs. In 1989, joint Mongolian-Hungarian-Soviet archeologists excavated this.
