Traveling to Mongolia for the first time is an exciting adventure, but its unpredictable weather and remote locations make smart packing essential. Pack as light as you comfortably can! You’ll be moving between camps daily, and while your guide, driver, and camp staff will help, you’ll still need to handle your belongings frequently. Also, your driver will need to fit all the luggage into the car each day, so keeping things compact makes the journey easier for everyone.
Here are a few recommended essentials:
Clothing Essentials
- Layered Clothing: Temperatures can swing dramatically, so pack base layers, fleece, and a windproof/waterproof jacket. Even in mid-summer, Mongolia can get quite cold at night, especially in northern Mongolia, and it rains quite a bit. However, in southern Mongolia, it will be really hot during the day.
- Thermal Wear: Useful during unexpected cold snaps, especially in northern Mongolia.
- Comfortable Footwear: Sturdy hiking boots or sneakers are a good idea.
- Rubber Slippers: For use in the shower and bathroom at ger camps.
Gear and Accessories Essentials
- Sunscreen and Sunglasses: Will be very useful for sunny Mongolia.
- Portable Power Bank: With limited electricity in remote areas, a power bank is essential for charging your devices. Please check the power bank capacity allowance with your airline and pack it in your carry-on bag.
- 2-pin Plug Adaptor: Mongolia uses 220V power and European-style 2-pin plugs.
- Refillable Water Bottle: Please bring your own water bottle to refill along the way. We encourage our clients to avoid using single-use bottled water when traveling in the countryside, as waste recycling in Mongolia is not well developed. We will provide 5 liters of pure water to refill your bottle during the trip.
- Insect Repellent: Especially useful near rivers or lakes.
- Money Belt or Shoulder Strap Day Pack: Easy to carry in front of you, hands-free. Small enough to keep close, yet big enough to hold valuables and essentials.
- Ear Plugs: Useful if you’re a light sleeper, especially in local hotels.
- Torch/Headlamp: Practical for going to the bathroom in the evenings and at night in ger camps (you can also use your phone's flashlight).
Toiletries and Medical Supplies
- Lip Balm and Moisturizer: The dry climate can be tough on your skin.
- Toilet Paper or Wet Wipes: Tourist camps provide toilet paper, but a small, folded roll is useful to have on hand. Many Mongolian toilets are basic and lack toilet paper.
- Personal Medication: Although we provide first aid kits with basic supplies, it is illegal to dispense medication of any kind by law. Make sure to bring your own medications based on your experience and personal health needs.
- Sanitary Items: Most tourist camps provide sanitary items, but some may not provide slippers, toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, or washing gel. You might prefer to bring your own preferred, small-sized versions. Towels are provided in the tourist camps, so there’s no need to bring one.
