Khoomii

The “khoomei” or throat singing reproduces natural sounds like the flow of water, the breath of wind, the echo of the mountains, winds, the rumble of thunder, the singing of birds, etc. The khöömii is unique in that it does not use musical instruments and creates a truly wonderful sound.

The origin of Khoomii (throat singing):
It is said that the khoomii or overtone singing originated in southwestern Mongolia in today's Khovd Province and Govi Altai region. Mongolia is often considered the most active center of overtone singing in the world.

Khoomii is divided into six categories:

  • Lip or Labial (Uruuliin Khoomii)
    The palatal (tagnain khoomi)
  • Nasal (khamriin khoomii)
  • Glottal or Throat (bagalzuuriin khoomii),
  • Chest and abdomen (tseejnii khondiin khoomii)
  • Khoomii combined with long song or Tide (Hosmoljin throat)

The difference lies in the technique used. Khöömii is also divided into Tuva khöömii and Mongolian khöömii.
