Khar Lake (Ulaagchin Khar Lake)

It is located 80 km northeast of Erdenekhairkhan soum, Zavkhan, and 110 km from the Uliastai town, Zavkhan province. Ulaagchnii Khar Lake has been protected as a Strictly Protected Area since 2010.

This eye-catching, emerald lake’s northern and southern shore is surrounded by sand dunes. The shoreline of Khar Lake is rocky, forming a peninsula and bays that penetrate into the lake water. Smooth black algae growing on the bottom of the lake, covering most of the bottom with light-colored silt. This freshwater lake has 2 islands called Ikh, "big", and Baga, "small", Avkhash.
Bird watchers can observe the 13 species of migratory birds including Whooper swan, Greylag goose, near the lake. There are mammals such as deer, roe deer, fox, wolf, corsac fox cat, and marmot are seen near the lake. The lake freezes in late October and reaches a thickness of 110 centimeters.
In the west and northwest, the mountains such as Gezeg Saikhan, Gezeg Khairkhan, Chandmani, and Tavan Khar extend to the Chono Khairkhan River and are separated from Khar-Us Lake. Ulaagchin Khar Lake is smaller than Khar-Us Lake in Khovd province, but a deeper lake.

Size of the lake: It has a depth of about 48 meters, an average width of 15 kilometers, and a maximum length of 36 kilometers. covers an area of ​​574.8 square kilometers, located at 1,132 meters above sea level.

The source of the lake: Khar-Us Lake discharges its excess water to (Ulaagchin) Khar Lake via the Chono Kharaikh River. (Ulaagchin) Khar Lake supplies excess water to Durgun Lake through the Khomiin Khooloi and to the Zavkhan River via the Tathan-Teel River. 
The 12-kilometer-long Tatkhan-Teel River not only carries excess water from Ulaagchin Khar Lake but also serves as the only channel to transport water from all the rivers and lakes of the Mongol Altai to Khyargas Lake.
