Khar Zurkhnii Khukh Lake

Khar Zurkhnii Khukh Lake is located 35km north from the main road in the northwest from Tsenkhermandal Soum, Khentii Aimag. Khar Zurkhnii Khukh lake means Blue Lake of Black Heart in Mongolian. Black Heart is the pointed topped mountain on the north side of the lake. A fresh watered Lake Khukh which consists of 2 lakes is 1675m above sea level.

Today on the shore of the lake, there are wooden monuments dedicated to the 840 years’ birth anniversary of Genghis khan. Woodcrafts represent 36 golden lineage khans of Genghis Khaan. On the central part of this woodcraft of Genghis khan, his father Esukhei, mother Oulen, and his queen Borte Ujin were posed. This memorial complex consists of 50 woodcrafts including 9 generals of Genghis khan placed at two sides of the main gate.  Boards at the king figures have English-Mongolian inscriptions of deeds and specific events that took place at times.
Except for the historical importance, the Khukh Lake is picturesque with abundant vegetation and wildlife in the surrounding mountain.

History related to the lake: Blue Lake is a very important place in Mongolian history. According to history, on the southern shore of the lake, Temuujin was enthroned as a khaan of the united tribes of Mongolia and given the title of “Genghis Khan” which means Oceanic great king in 1189. In the Secret History of Mongols book, place names such as Lake Khukh, Mount Kharzurkh, and Sengur Gorkhi were mentioned.
