Ugii Lake

Ugii Lake has located Ogiinuur soum of Arkhangai province, 360km far away from Ulaanbaatar, It is 1,337 meters above sea level and is part of the Arctic Ocean basin

      The Lake is 7 kilometers long and 5 kilometers wide in a 27 km square area. At the deepest point, about 15 meters.

Ugii Lake is a good place for fishing and is rich in Perch and Pike. The catch possible from the lake is 50 tons a year. Swan Goose, White Spoonbill, and Dalmatian Pelican have been recorded. Some 14 species of fish, 27 species of floating plants, and 48 species of floating animals, and 150 species of birds have recorded in and around the lake. 

      Ramsar Convention registered Ugii Lake as a protected water ecosystem in 1971. 

This lake attracts not only foreign tourists but also domestic tourists.  Don’t lose the chance to swim in the lake, during the heat of summer.

Ugii lake Legend:

Once upon a time, a nobleman had a beautiful daughter named Ogii, who was amazed by her homeland. The daughter grew up and fell in love with a tall, handsome local horseman. One day, the nobleman’s servants found out about two couple’s relationship and gossiped about it to the daughter’s rich father and her mother. 

      The rich gentleman refused to give his daughter to a poor horseman and forced his daughter to marry a rich man. Shortly afterward, while Ugii and the young horseman were meeting at a date, the nobleman's servants came and arrested the young man to kill and the young man told to his beloved Ugii "I will become Avzaga Khairkhan mountain in my homeland, and I will give you a beautiful lake.

     " Elders say that the tears that the daughter shed for her beloved boyfriend turned into a lake and remained in her name. Since then, the fog from Ugii Lake has risen and reached Avzaga Mountain. 

Thus, there is a saying, “Ogii Lake is guarded by women, and if a woman is immersed in it, she will suffer.” Then locals worshiped the surrounding Bayart Ovoo, Tsagaan Ovoo, and Altangerel Ovoo to soothe Ugii lake.
