Taikhar Rock
It is located 22 kilometers from Tsetserleg town, in the territory of Ikhtamir Soum, Arkhangai province. Taikhar Rock is a large 18m-high cliff of granite. Over 150 writings in diverse scripts including Turkic, Uyghur, Mongolian, Tibetan, Manchu, and Chinese were carved on the gigantic rock formation. The oldest one is the runic writing, dating back from the Turkish period of the 6th and 7th centuries. An ovoo was placed at its top. Unfortunately, new generations engrave many scribbling and historical old ones started disappearing. This huge rock was determined to be under state protection in 1994.
This rock cliff was formed by separating from the river bank due to millions of years’ continual flow of Khoid Tamir River through granite cape on its northern bank. It is believed that anyone who can throw a stone over the cliff, will get lucky and rich.
The legend about Taikhar rock:
There is a myth about the rock. Once upon a time, a giant snake came out of a hole and started swallowing local people and animals. Local people asked for help from a strong brave man named Bukhbilegt (Strong and wise). Then he fought and pushed it to the hole and throw this rock on a giant snake.
The best season to visit
The best season to visit is from late May to early September.
