Darkhad Depression
It is located in the western part of the Horidol Saridag mountain range in Khuvsgul aimag. The Darkhad Depression is the confluence of 36 major rivers in Mongolia.
In total, it is a watershed with 248 small and large rivers, 377 lakes and ponds, and 24 springs. It makes up 95% of the freshwater of Mongolia. From here, the Selenga River flows, and many of its tributaries flow into Lake Baikal. The largest river is the Delger River.
Shishged is the source of the Yenisei River, which eventually flows into the Arctic Ocean. Many species of fish live in each of the rivers, lakes, and ponds around the Darkhad Depression.
The Darkhad Depression is home to 70% of the Khuvsgul Great Taiga and is home to Mongolia's largest mammal elk and reindeer. White moss, a reindeer feed, grows only in the Darkhad Depression. The Tsaatan people live in two divisions in the west and east taiga of Khuvsgul, and 60% of the indigenous Tsaatan live in the east taiga or the Darkhad Depression.
