Mongolia Border Crossings

Mongolia borders with China to the south, east, and west, and Russia to the north. However, Mongolia and Kazakhstan do not share a common border, the two countries being separated by a small part of Russia and China within 60kms.
Mongolia has many border crossings with China and Russia, but not all of them are open to international travelers.

Mongolia has officially 46 border points according to Government resolution and protocol between Mongolia and neighbor 2 countries (Russia and China) as below:

29 border points with Russia
13 border points with China
4 Airline border point

As of 2018, there were 2 airline border points, 10 operating border points with Russia, and 13 border points with China. And then a total of 25 points were operating. Rest 21 points are not yet opened due to lack of usage.

- There are 3 rail border points /international-2, mutual-1/,
- 20 auto road border points /international permanent border point 7, mutual permanent 9 border points, mutual temporary 4 border points/,
- Airline 2 border points /Buyant Ukhaa, Choibalsan/.

Mongolian International airline border checkpoint

There are 4 airports for international passenger and freight transportation,

1. Buyant-Ukhaa (in Ulaanbaatar)
2. Ulgii, (in Bayan Ulgii)
3. Choibalsan (in Dornod)
4. Khovd (in Khovd)

But Ulgii and Khovd airports are not operating internationally.

1. “BUYANT UKHAA” AIRPORT CHECKPOINT
First established in 1949 and located in Khan Uul district, 18km from the city center of Ulaanbaatar, this international airport receives all international flights.

2. “CHOIBALSAN” AIRPORT CHECKPOINT
First established in 2010 and located Herlen soum, Dornod province since established in 2010, this airport checkpoint is located 16km from Herlen soum center. From March 2010. Now, this international airport receives Choibalsan- Hailaar – Choibalsnan and Choibalsan – Manjuur – Choibalsan international flights respectively 2-3 times per week.

3. “KHOVD” AIRPORT CHECKPOINT
Located in Khovd city, Khovd province, and established in 2010, this airport checkpoint is 15km from the city center. In October, 2010, first operated Khovd –Ulaanbaatar – Khovd domestic flights. Currently, it is receiving local flights from Ulaanbaatar

4. “ULGII” AIRPORT CHECKPOINT
This airport checkpoint was established in 1992 and located 7km from Ulgii city, Bayan Ulgii province. Currently, it is receiving domestic flights from Ulaanbaatar

Monday-Friday from 08:00 to 17:00 / Teatime: 12: 00-14: 00 /	It has a permanent operation for international passenger and freight transportation. -850 km from Ulaanbaatar - 295 km from the center of Sukhbaatar aimag -75 km from Erdenetsagaan soum of Sukhbaatar aimag
5		SUMBER – RASHAAN (temporary operation)	Located at the Khalkhgol soum, Dornod province in the east of Mongolia.
